May 30, 2024 - Enga landslide

Sad news from Papua New Guinea

Early in the morning on Friday, May 24th, a major landslide covered a large area in Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Estimates of people buried alive range from 670 to 2000 people. No SIL personnel were directly affected by the incident. (SIL is the organization we worked under in PNG.)

This happened far from the areas where we lived and worked in PNG, but Steve worked with the Enga language team on quality assurance checking for 36 percent of their New Testament.

The Enga New Testament is ready for distribution.

The Enga New Testament has been printed and is now in PNG. A dedication celebration with distribution of the Scriptures is scheduled for July 2nd. The Enga translation committee had originally planned an event to promote and distribute the Enga Scriptures to the area affected by the landslide on July 11th. But now it is uncertain whether that event can still happen. (The population of Enga speakers is 370,000.)

Praise God…

  • That God is in control and can bring good out of any situation.

Please pray…

  • For the Enga people who have lost loved ones and been displaced by the landslide and for the ongoing relief efforts.
  • For the upcoming dedication of the Enga New Testament, scheduled for July 2nd. Pray that God will be glorified and - that His newly translated Word will provide comfort for people who are in the midst of grief.
  • That the Enga people will encounter God through His Word in their languages.
